East African rubies are usually purplish to dark red in color and come in a variety of sizes and quality ranging from opaque to translucent to transparent. Usually African rubies are very much included and are cut en cabochon. Transparent rubies are usually cut and polished into faceted stones. The best color in African rubies is the fine dark.
Treatments on African rubies depend on their origin. Rubies from Madagascar are generally heat treated to increase transparency and color. Some rubies from Tanzania and Kenya are also heated for the same purpose. However, in general African rubies are not treated since heat treatments is not suitable on them. While purchasing ruby, one should always be aware of the treatments performed, if any, and should ask for a reputed gemological laboratory certificate to ensure that treatments are disclosed.
African Blue Saphire
East African Sapphire is the most precious and valuable blue gemstone. It is a very desirable gemstone due to its excellent color, hardness, durability, and luster. In the gem trade, Sapphire without any color prefix refers to the blue variety of the mineral Corundum. However, the term Sapphire encompasses all other gem varieties and colors of Corundum as well, excluding Ruby, the red variety of Corundum, which has its own name since antiquity. Sapphire is used in all forms of jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings. It is used both as centerpiece gemstone in pendants and rings, as well as a secondary stone to complement other gemstones such as Diamonds. Blue sapphire symbolizes honesty, clarity of feelings, and deep emotional attachment. he same holds true for all other color varieties of Sapphire. However, the word ``Sapphire`` in its plain context refers only to blue Sapphire, unless a prefix color is specified. Sapphire with a color other than blue is often called a ``fancy`` in the gem trade.
The color of a blue sapphire is more important than its clarity. Sapphires are rarely completely clean and even very expensive stones can be slightly included. Subtle differences in color can make great variations in valuations of fine gemstones. Fine loose gemstones of good color and clarity are always rare and valuable. Highly saturated medium or medium dark blue tones are best, blue sapphires which are too dark or too light are worth considerably less.
Emerald is the most precious member of the Beryl group. The name Emerald is derived from the Greek ``smaragdos``, which in turn came from the Persian, then via the Old French ``esmeralde`` to its modern form, and literally means 'green gemstone.' Its green to many is incomparable, and is therefore call ``emerald green``, a phrase in common use both inside and outside the mineralogy world.
East African Emerald is classified as one of the traditional four precious gemstones along with Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond, is the birthstone for May and in many cultures is used to commemorating the 20th and 35th wedding anniversaries.
While the colour of Emeralds is extremely variable (the phrase ``100 different Emeralds, 100 different colours, holds significant truth), they are, by definition Emerald Green. That is to say a medium or darker green to blue green Beryl, in which the green color is derived from trace quantities of chromium, vanadium, or a combination of both. The most popular and valuable color is a slightly bluish green in a medium dark tone with strong to vivid saturation, epitomised by the Zimbabwean deposit of Sandawana. The term ``Colombian`` Emerald is often used to describe vivid, slightly bluish / yellowish green stones of medium, to medium dark color, no matter what their actual geographic origin. Emeralds of lighter color are sometimes called ``Brazillian or South American`` Emerald, even if they were mined in Africa.
